Which AI is the best for improving your spoken English?
I tested ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google’s Gemini, Apple’s Siri, and lesser-known AI like TalkPal and Sesame. Here are the results (in no particular order).
Testing ChatGPT for English Practice
ChatGPT: https://openai.com/
Craig begins with ChatGPT, asking it to correct his English and clarify words he doesn’t understand.
They discuss the concept of happiness and the term “fulfilment.”
Craig attempts to interrupt ChatGPT, but finds it challenging due to pauses in the conversation.
ChatGPT explains the concept of sentence stress and intonation, but Craig finds the pauses unnatural.
Exploring TalkPal for Informal Chats
TalkPal, an AI language teacher named Emma.
TalkPal: https://ta lkpal.ai/
Emma engages Craig in a conversation about happiness and the meaning of small moments.
Craig asks Emma to speak in an Indian accent, but Emma explains she can’t change her accent.
Emma provides tips for small talk with people from India and explains common phrases like “reading the room” and “stand out.”
Craig tests Langua Talk, an AI named John, who corrects his English and explains grammar points.
Languatalk: https://languatalk.com/
John explains the difference between “John” and “Jon” and discusses happiness with Craig.
Craig asks John to speak in an Indian accent, but John struggles with the request.
John’s slow response time and incorrect grammar corrections lead Craig to criticize the AI.
Craig tests Sesame, an AI named Maya, who engages Craig in a natural and engaging conversation.
Sesame: https://www.sesame.com/
Maya explains the meaning of “down for a chat” and shares her background as an AI created by a team in San Francisco.
They discuss the concept of happiness and Maya’s journey from being overly polite to becoming more natural.
Craig appreciates Maya’s natural sounding responses and her ability to handle interruptions.
Craig tests Siri, finding it unhelpful for English practice and unable to translate between dialects.
SIRI from Apple on iPhone 11. iOS version 18.
He then tests Copilot, an AI from Microsoft, who engages Craig in a conversation about happiness and well-being.
Copilot: https://copilot.microsoft.com/
Copilot can switch between different accents, including Indian and French, and provides detailed explanations for grammar points.
Craig appreciates Copilot’s natural sounding voice and its ability to handle complex topics like cultural exchange.
Craig tests Gemini, an AI from Google, who engages Craig in a conversation about happiness and provides pronunciation exercises.
Gemini: https://gemini.google.com/app
Gemini explains the difference between “right” and “wrong” and discusses the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Craig finds Gemini’s pronunciation practice lacking, as it makes mistakes and doesn’t provide correct answers.
Gemini’s inability to understand humor and its limited pronunciation exercises lead Craig to criticize the AI.
Final Thoughts and Recommendations
Craig shares his overall experience with the various AI options and his personal preferences.
He recommends Copilot for general conversation practice and Sesame for its natural sounding responses.
Craig criticizes Elsa Speak for requiring credit card details for a trial and not providing accurate pronunciation practice.
He invites listeners to share their experiences with AI for English practice and to consider joining his online conversation courses for more personalized help.
