In today’s podcast, you’ll learn all about bag vocabulary, including backpack, satchel, sling bag and duffel. You ‘ll also learn some idioms connected to bags that will help you expand your vocabulary.

Bags

Backpack: A bag with two shoulder straps, worn on the back, often used by students or hikers.

Rucksack: similar to a backpack but often larger and more rugged. Commonly used for hiking long distances, camping and in the military.

Suitcase: a large bag used for travel and that often has wheels.

Carry-on bag: a bag small enough to go inside an aeroplane.

Messenger Bag: A bag with a long strap worn across the body, often used by cyclists or for casual use.

Duffel Bag: A large, cylindrical bag with a top closure, used for travel or sports.

Handbag (UK) / purse (US): a small bag typically carried by ladies.

Clutch bag: A small, handheld bag without straps, often used for formal occasions.

Man bag: A man’s handbag or shoulder bag

Shopping Bag/carrier bag: A bag used for carrying purchased items, often made of plastic, paper, or fabric.

Satchel: A bag with a flap and a long strap, typically used for carrying books or documents.

Briefcase: A flat, rectangular bag with a handle, used for carrying documents and laptops.

Crossbody/Sling Bag: A small to medium-sized bag with a long strap worn across the body.

Fanny Pack (US): A small bag worn around the waist, also known as a bum bag (UK).

Laptop Bag: A bag specifically designed to carry a laptop, often with additional compartments for accessories.

Gym Bag: A bag used to carry workout clothes and equipment.

Beach Bag: A large, often waterproof bag used to carry items to the beach.


Idioms

To let the cat out of the bag: To reveal a secret unintentionally.

To be in the bag: To be certain or assured.

Can’t fight/punch/argue your way out of a paper bag: To have no ability to achieve things

To pack it in: To stop doing something, especially a job or activity.

Not my bag: To indicate that something is not what you typically like
“Old bag”: A derogatory term for an unpleasant old woman.

Bag lady: A homeless woman who carries her belongings around in plastic bags

Bag of wind/Windbag: A very talkative person who is tiresome to listen to

Sleazebag: An unpleasantly lecherous man

Douchebag (slang): an obnoxious, offensive, or disgusting person
