We often hear from you that you want to improve your speaking and become more fluent in English.
In this episode, we have some suggestions for practice activities you could use with a partner to become a more effective and fluent English speaker.

Thank you to everyone who has sent us videos for the British Council project:

Voice message from Francisco from Chile
XtheX last year – last year during the lockdown.
Such as…reading books, listening to podcasts, watching films etc.
During travels (trips)

Good expressions: fond of../I am very glad to meet you…/I’m eager to listen/I have been studying English for many years../the opportunity is rare…
Using more contractions (I’m, I’ve etc) will make your English sound more natural.

Word games and fluency practice activities

1) hyponyms (A word whose mean ing is included in the meaning of another more general word)
Vehicle: bus, car, lorry, motorbike, coach, tram, train

How many can you think of?
fruit:
professions:
birds:
types of bread:
Open spaces:

2) Don’t say ‘yes’ or ‘no’

3) What’s my job? 20 (yes or no) questions

4) One Word at a Time – a letter to Prince Harry

5) Psychology test

a) You are walking along a path. What kind of path is it?
b) You find a twig. What kind of twig is it and what do you do with it?
c) You carry on walking, but a large tree is blocking the path. What do you do?
d) You see a bear on the path. What do you do?
e) You arrive at a fork in the path. What do you do?
f) You come to a wall. Describe it.
g) You hear a sound beyond the wall. What is it?

Possible psychological explanations
a) How you see life
b) How you deal with small problems
c) How you deal with big problems
d) Your approach to love and sex
e) Your political tendencies
f) How you see death
g) Life after death

6) Speak about something for 2 or 3 minutes and include 2 lies.
Partner listens and writes down the lies.

7) Tell Us Three Things About….
Tell us 3 things about a chosen subject.
Examples:
• Tell us three things about your family.
• Tell us three things you like about your country.
• Tell us three things you want to do before you die.
• Tell us three things you regret doing.
• Tell us about the best three days of your life so far.
• Tell us three things you would change about your home.
• Tell us three famous people (dead or alive) you would like to have dinner with, and why.

8) Choose a letter of the alphabet (for example ‘S’) go to the contact list on your mobile phone and tell us about the first person who appears under ‘S’.
Who is this person?
What relationship do you have with him/her?
When was the last time you saw this person?

9) Opposite adjectives game. Tell your partner a short story. For every noun you must use an adjective to describe it. Your partner writes down only the adjectives while listening. S/he tries to remember the story and retells the story, but this time using the opposite/different adjectives.
e.g. A- An old woman was walking down a wide, busy street when…
B- A young man was walking down a narrow, quiet street when…

…and now it’s your turn to practise your English.

We also want to say thank you to our Gold sponsor this month, GABITEL INGENIEROS. What do they do? Well, they’re involved in many areas of engineering, but perhaps of interest to you is that they are currently working on an important project in the UK for laying down, that means installing, fibre optic cable.
If you’d like to join their team and work in the UK they are accepting job applications right now. To apply, you must have PRE-SETTLED or SETTLED STATUS in the UK. – Brexit – AIRC342.
If you have that status and you want to work for a growing, expanding company, send your CV / resume to [email protected].
Gabitel is also expanding in Germany, so if you have a good level of German, and you’re interested, send your CV to the same address, [email protected]
Reza and I would like to thank Rodrigo, Genoveva and all the good people over at www.gabitelingenieros.com for being a gold sponsor of the show.
