On today’s podcast we talk about aliens, UFOs, crop circles and life on other planets. Welcome to Aprender Inglés con Reza y Craig
Audio message from Gabriela from Peru
Examples of advanced collocation:
“I want to tell you about an awesome experience I went through” (to go through/have an experience)
“This experience led me (to) meet great people” (to lead you to do something)
“The ship docked in Barcelona” (to dock = atracar, a dock = dársena)
Gabriela only saw Barcelona from the porthole! (porthole = portilla)
Have you ever been on a cruise? Are you planning to go on a cruise?
Gabriela also asked us to explain the difference between “spend time” and “pass time”.
Use “spend time” to talk about the time it takes you to do an activity.
“I like to spend time reading travel blogs when I’m not busy.” or “I spend far too much time on Facebook and YouTube these days.”
“Pass the time” means doing something to make the time pass quickly while you are waiting for something else.
“When I’m waiting in a queue, I pass the time playing Candy Crush”, for example.
Or “I pass the time listening to podcasts when I’m driving.”
Audio message from Francisco from Mexico
Very fluent, very clear.
‘I have figured out’ (worked out) – arrived at the conclusion
Gerunds infinitives: made me thinking (made me think)
I started to thinking (I started to think)
(Gerunds/infinitives: Episode 14 and Episode 15)
Advice for not translating from Spanish to English and not getting stressed?
Email from Rafael from México
Good afternoon from México (Guadalajara state, land of tequila and mariachis) I wonder if you could speak about aliens, UFO’s and crop circles. I’m know you spoke about ghosts and the supernatural in Episode 131, but I realized you don’t talked (you haven’t talked) about aliens, by the other hand I’m listened all the week (I listen every day/during the week) when I commute to my work (maybe one hour). thanks a lot for your excellent work.
Kinds Regards, Rafael.
Aliens and UFOs
An alien can be an extraterrestrial and also extranjero/a, an illegal alien’.
“Illegal aliens have always been a problem in the United States. Ask any Indian.”
You can also alienate someone by making them feel separate, strange or hostile. “Be careful that you don’t alienate your girlfriend’s parents.”
A creature from outer space
Crop circles – circulos en las cosechas – Crop Circles are geometric patterns that appear mysteriously in crop fields. Modern crop circles didn’t appear until the 1970s in the English countryside. There are many theories about how crop circles are made, but the only known, proven cause of crop circles is humans.
Alien abduction – abducciones de aliens – to abduct (raptar, secuestrar)
UFO (Unidentified Flying Object) – OVNI ) objeto volador no identificado
Flying saucer – platillo volante
A light year – the distance that light can travel in one year.
Light moves at a velocity of about 300,000 kilometers (km) each second. In one year, it can travel about 10 trillion km. So, one light-year is equal to about 9.5 trillion kilometers.

How many North Americans believe that aliens exist?
According to a study from National Geographic Channel, 36% believe aliens exist (80 million Americans) and over 10% say they have seen an alien spaceship in the sky.
From those who believe in aliens, if an alien knocked on their door, 22% would try to make friends with it, 15% would run away, 13% would lock their doors. 2% would attack the alien.
Do you want to know what Stephen Hawking says about aliens?
“Planet Gliese 832c potentially has alien life but humans need to be wary. (wary – receloso/a, precavido/a).
“One day, we might receive a signal from a planet like this, but we should be wary of answering back,” Whhhaaaaat!!!! WTF!
Planet Gliese 832c has five times the mass of earth and a similar temperature.
It’s 16 light-years from earth. A light-year is about 9.5 trillion kilometres.
What do you think? Do you believe in aliens or crop circles? Have we been visited yet? What would you say to an alien if you saw one? What’s your favourite alien film?

On next week’s episode: British Music Legends (Francisco, from Úbeda) Who sang ‘Is there life on Mars’?
The music in this podcast is by Pitx. The track is called ‘See You Later’
David Bowie ! Of course..!!!
Totally agree!
Hi friends!! I don’t think that crop circles are made by human.. at least not all of them. I share whit you an amazing and incredible case: http://www.cropcircleresearch.com/articles/arecibo.html
There are two diferent things: life outside our planet and aliens visiting us.
There are two billions (American) stars in our galaxy and there are billions of galaxis and that makes a hughe number of stars. Very likely, most stars or possibly all, have planets and perhaps every planet system has a planet into the circumstellar habitable zone. Logically there must be millions of civilizations.
Did any of them visit us? I am sure they did not. The reason is that the distance between stars makes those encounters something impossible. The closests stars are several light years away and it is not possible to travel at the speed of light.
Sorry, I meant two handred billions stars which means two handred thousand millions stars in our galaxy. And we know that there are approximately the same amount of galaxis, therefore if we multiply we get a number close to infinite.
Hundred, hundred, hundred… I beg your pardon.
Good point, Rafael. Perhaps in the future we’ll be visited by life forms from other galaxies. If you look at how fast technology has developed on our planet in the last 100 years, it’s not inconceivable that other civilizations on other planets have more advanced tech that could enable them to travel further.
To sum up, we can´t assure that there isn´t life in a far, far away galaxy…
