In this podcast, you’ll learn some technical vocabulary related to architecture. These words are not only useful for architects. They’re also handy for more advanced students who want to talk about architecture at a deeper level.

Vocabulary
Planning permission/permit – Official permission to put up or alter a building given by the local authority
Blueprint – A detailed plan or drawing used to design buildings.
Floor plan – A drawing that shows the layout of rooms on a single level of a building.
Elevation – A drawing that shows the exterior view of a building from one side.
Load-bearing wall – A wall that supports weight from above.
Facade – The front or outer appearance of a building.
Foundation – The base on which a building stands.
Structural integrity – The strength and stability of a building.
Site analysis – The study of a location before designing a building.
Zoning regulations – Laws that control how land can be used.
Green belt – Open land outside a town where building is not usually allowed
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) – A technical evaluation of possible environmental consequences for large-scale building projects
Open-plan – A space without internal walls or dividers.
CAD (Computer-Aided Design) – Software used for drawing and modelling buildings.
Skylight – A window built into a roof to let in light.
Ventilation – The flow of fresh air through a space.
Retrofitting – Updating old buildings with modern systems.
Cowboy builder – A sub-standard builder not qualified or equipped for the job
