This episode deals with specifically British slang. There might also be alternative North American/Australian/Irish/Jamaican etc. slang words for some on our list. Many slang words come into and go out of fashion. We’ve tried to choose timeless slang words for our list.
food – grub/nosh
toilet – bog/loo/little boys’ or girls’ room
sausages – bangers
potatoes – spuds (sausages and mashed potatoes – bangers and mash)
money – dosh
pound (money) – quid (five pounds – a fiver, ten pounds – a tenner)
broke – skint
fit – attractive (person)
kiss – snog (to be successful with a new romantic partner – to pull/get off with someone)
husband/wife – my other half
problem – hassle
suspicious – dodgy
happy – chuffed
alcoholic drink – booze / pub – boozer/my local (pub) (A “boozer” can also mean a person who drinks a lot)
man – bloke/chap/fellow or fella/geezer
boss – guv (guv’nor)
To vomit – spew, throw up
gullible – mug
short sleep – kip/forty winks
chop-chop – quickly (used to express the need to hurry)
What does this sentence really mean?
This fella has had too much nosh and is going to spew – he needs to find a loo chop-chop.
