20 British Slang words

We spoke about Australian slang in https://inglespodcast.com/409
This episode deals with specifically British slang. There might also be alternative North American/Australian/Irish/Jamaican etc. slang words for some on our list. Many slang words come into and go out of fashion. We’ve tried to choose timeless slang words for our list.

food – grub/nosh

toilet – bog/loo/little boys’ or girls’ room

sausages – bangers

potatoes – spuds (sausages and mashed potatoes – bangers and mash)

money – dosh

pound (money) – quid (five pounds – a fiver, ten pounds – a tenner)

broke – skint

fit – attractive (person)

kiss – snog (to be successful with a new romantic partner – to pull/get off with someone)

husband/wife – my other half

problem – hassle

suspicious – dodgy

happy – chuffed

alcoholic drink – booze / pub – boozer/my local (pub) (A “boozer” can also mean a person who drinks a lot)

man – bloke/chap/fellow or fella/geezer

boss – guv (guv’nor)

To vomit – spew, throw up

gullible – mug

short sleep – kip/forty winks

chop-chop – quickly (used to express the need to hurry)

What does this sentence really mean?
This fella has had too much nosh and is going to spew – he needs to find a loo chop-chop.

Thank you, Rita. Congratulations on listening to ALL of our episodes. That’s not an easy thing to do! Have you sent us a voice message yet? If not, it would be lovely to hear from you and include your message in a future show.

Sending you a voice message is on my bucket list, unfortunately I’m airc-addict but really clumsy about modern technology, but sooner or later I’ll be able to manage and I’ll send you two a long, long, long chit chat ????????. Bye for now ????
